BBB Warning: Bitcoin Mining Computers

BBB Warning: Bitcoin Mining Computers

Better Business Bureau has been flooded with complaints about an Austin, Texas-based company that manufactures computers used to “mine” bitcoins. Complainants say they haven’t received promised refunds.

Consumers who complained to BBB say they spent over $6,000 per unit for the devices. Many consumers sought refunds when the company stated in February that the machines they pre-ordered late last year would not perform up to the specifications it advertised. Complaints about the business are coming in not only from U.S. customers, but from other countries as well, including the United Kingdom and Australia.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin has more information about the company and specific complaints from consumers. A few customers have received refunds, but many have not, and some state that the business does not respond to calls or emails.

The company first came to BBB’s attention earlier this year. In March and April, the BBB closed 11 complaints against the company. In the past month, however, 39 complaints have been filed, prompted the warning. The company has yet to provide an explanation for the wave of complaints, nor has it responded to the majority of the complaints filed through BBB.

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has issued an Investor Alert about bitcoins and calls them “more than a bit risky” as an investment

BBB offers the following advice for any shopping online:

• Do your research. Check out the company’s BBB Business Review before purchasing anything from a website.

• Pay with a credit card. Charges made on a credit card can be disputed after a purchase, whereas debit, cash or wire transfer transaction cannot.

• Review refund and shipping policies. If you can’t find the terms and conditions, ask the seller through an email or telephone call to provide them to you in writing.

• Keep documentation of your order. After completing the online order process, a shopper should be provided with a confirmation receipt. BBB recommends printing a copy of the confirmation and any indication of the expected delivery timeframe for future reference.

Several Entities Battling to Dominate Bitcoin Mining

While most of the developments in the cryptocurrency industry have focused on bitcoin payments or blockchain applications, there are still a lot of entities that are battling to dominate the bitcoin mining arena. After all, the blockchain is distributed among the computers part of the mining network, which suggests that it is still possible for a single entity to take control of the entire system. One of the most popular features of the bitcoin mining network is that any changes in the blockchain must be updated in all computers involved. If there is a discrepancy, the network will favor....

How to build a cryptocurrency mining rig

Building a crypto mining rig involves a lot of different parts — here’s how to get started. Cryptocurrency mining involves using a computer, or several computers, to validate transactions on a blockchain. Technically, these computers solve cryptographic equations and record data in a digital ledger. The more computers solving equations, the faster the blockchain can validate transactions. When miners verify the hashes of unconfirmed blocks, they receive a reward for each verified hash. Mining can be energy and computationally-intensive, requiring specialized hardware and crypto-mining....

Quantum Computers May Arrive Much Sooner Than Expected

The rapid pace of development may make quantum computers a reality by the end of this year. Computer Science is one of the rapidly advancing fields. The progression of Bitcoin mining hardware since the cryptocurrency’s inception in 2009 is a good example. Now, the next giant leap for computing is stated to be Quantum Computing and it may soon become a reality, or at least that’s what a leading science publication states. NJ Settlement with Controversial Bitcoin Mining Project

Tidbit, a student bitcoin mining project, was issued a subpoena by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs in December 2013 and has recently reached a settlement with the regulator. The terms of the settlement prevent the developers from accessing New Jersey computers unlawfully for a period of two years in its experiment to leverage bitcoin mining against online advertising. The project, which was developed at the Node Knockout Hackathon and won a prize for innovation, posed an out-of-the-box solution to the long-standing dependence of internet companies on online advertising. It....

London Student Mines Dogecoin With University's Computers - They Don't Know, Yet

Each evening, 'Felix' sneaks into the computer suite at his university and starts up the machines. One by one, he runs a script on each computer and his 'workers' begin solving complex algorithms. You wouldn't know just by looking, but he's making his own money - using his university's computers to mine dogecoin. Felix's story mirrors that of a Harvard researcher who used his university's supercomputer for dogecoin mining, earning himself a permanent ban from the computer and, presumably, a heck of a lot of coins in the process. Like others who came onto the cryptocurrency scene late,....
